Have you ever wondered if there is a natural remedy for high blood pressure? Is your blood pressure above 90/140 mmHg? Even blood pressure above 80/120 mmHg is defined as “pre-hypertension”! You might want to read about what green tea and therapeutic breathing exercises can do for you!
An estimated 95% of people suffering from high blood pressure fall in the “primary or essential hypertension” category. This means there is no exact cause of it, although lifestyle (obesity, alcohol use, high salt intake, stress) can be an issue. The other 5%, called “secondary hypertension”, is a result of some other health issue like kidney disease, adrenal gland disease, or narrowing of the aorta. Leading scientific researchers did the following experiment: Two groups were tested and monitored for blood pressure changes.
One group had a regular diet while the other group was supplemented with catechin (catechins are polyphenols, powerful antioxidants found in green tea).
At the end of the 5-week experiment, the group with the regular diet showed blood pressure increases. The group that where fed catechin blood pressure stayed normal. After this initial test, the scientists swopped the diets for the two different groups. The surprising fact was that the swopping led to a reversal of the blood pressure trends in both groups.
The result of the study concluded that drinking moderate amounts of green every day can help with the prevention of high blood pressure.

Lower Cholesterol Through Green Tea
More recent research has indicated that green tea can contribute towards lowering of cholesterol (LDL, the “bad one”) and increasing of HDL cholesterol (the “good one”) and also lower triglyceride levels.
Some of the results are not exactly straight forward since the test participants combined a healthy diet and drank 5 cups of green tea per day. However, for these people, their LDL cholesterol level dropped by 10%. But do remember, this is green tea in combination with a healthy diet. Researchers also reported that antioxidants can help prevent blood clotting, which happens before a heart attack or stroke. Green tea contains catechins, which are very strong antioxidants.
A healthy diet will help you reach a lower cholesterol level range.
Your total cholesterol level (which is a combination of the LDL” the bad one” plus the HDL “the good one”) should be less than 200. A cholesterol level of above 240 is considered very high. If you break your total cholesterol level down into its components, then your LDL (it is “bad” because it deposits fat on your arterial wall) should be less than 130. Above 160 is considered very high. The HDL level (the “good one” because it carries cholesterol back to the liver and doesn’t let your bad one’s deposit onto the arterial wall) should be more than 50. Less than 40 is considered high risk.
Following a healthy diet which contains fruits, vegetables, whole grain products, poultry, fish, fat-free or 1% milk product, water, green tea and exercising 30 minutes a day will help you to achieve a healthy weight and lower LDL cholesterol levels.

Can Green Tea Prevent and Cure Cancer Naturally?
Most of us hope for a way to cure cancer naturally and of course to be able to get rid of it with a single pill. Possibly the most outstanding benefit of green tea is the prevention of cancer.
In countries like Japan and China where people drink a lot more tea, black and green as well, statistics show a lot less cancer than in other parts of the world.
Scientists believe that polyphenols (a type of antioxidant found in green tea) have a high impact on cancer cells and might help to cure cancer naturally. Catechins (a category of polyphenols) contains four different types of polyphenol catechins. Among the four, EGCG is the one that scientists believe has the most dramatic effect on cancerous cells. EGCG (Epigallocatechin Gallate) can neutralize free radicals. EGCG can bind to a protein (called laminin receptor) in tumor cells and it can slow down their growth. Do we need to give up caffeine while we are pregnant?

For pregnant women, to be on the safe side, doctors recommend limiting the caffeine intake to no more than 300 milligrams a day.
Excessive caffeine intake (more than five cups of coffee a day) can cause miscarriages. Your caffeine intake can come from many sources, not just your morning tea or coffee! Do some quick math and limit your sodas, teas and coffee to the minimum. It is good to know that an average cup of homemade…
Green tea has: 30 milligrams
Black tea has: 40 milligrams
Brewed coffee has: 120 milligrams
However just a little warning, a bottle of brewed green tea beverage can contain up to 110 mg of caffeine, so be cautious and read the labels. The same applies to any pre-made drinks. Read the labels!
If you are enjoying green tea, make your own. There is nothing wrong with drinking a cup or two of your favourite green tea while you are pregnant.
A tip on brewing: After you put the water over your tea leaves, let the leaves soak only for a couple of seconds. Remove the soaked water and add new hot water over your already soaked leaves. This new cup of tea will contain less caffeine.
Most of the caffeine comes out when you soak the leaves for the first time.
Green tea and pregnancy are just fine together if the caffeine intake is monitored.
It is recommended to ask your doctor’s opinion on how much caffeine you can take while you are pregnant!

There was a recent study and 30 women participated in it. 15 of them took green tea supplements while the other 15 took sugar pills. Among those who took the supplement, 5 got pregnant. The other 15, who took only the sugar pills, did not get pregnant at all. This experiment, however, was on a very small scale and scientists cannot firmly state that green tea supplements will help improve fertility.

Exciting new studies exist showing the correlation between skin cancer prevention and the most effective green tea polyphenol called EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate).
Scientists applied EGCG to skin that was later exposed to UV light. They found out that where the skin was protected by green tea containing EGCG, the skin stayed protected from reddening, blistering and cell division, which relate to early stages of skin cancer.
Catechins (a type of polyphenol) are unstable in solution and often break down within a short time. This means that green tea extract must be combined with sunscreen. You know the rule: the higher the SPF (30 or above) the better the sunscreen for your skin.

When can caffeine be bad for you?
If you have an excessive amount regularly, 1500 milligram or more per day.
If you are pregnant or nursing and consume more than 300 milligrams of caffeine per day. Caffeine can cause slower fetal growth and increase the risk of second-trimester miscarriage. In infants, it can cause restlessness and sleeping problems.
If you have heart problems, irregular heartbeats.
If you have an anxiety disorder, panic attack, depression.
If you have bleeding or blood clotting disorders.
Other possible side effects
Green tea contains tannins, which counter diarrhoea. It settles an upset stomach. However, in excess these tannins can cause the same problems as diarrhoea, upset stomach, constipation, and loss of appetite. Moderation in everything!
One cup of green tea contains approximately 0.3-0.5 mg of fluoride. While we need fluoride for healthy teeth, we also need fluoride in moderation. The amount we need to help prevent tooth decay is 1.0-1.5 milligrams per liter. Greater than 2.0 mg/liter of fluoride can have harmful effects, like discoloration of teeth or bone and skeletal damage. It is important to ask your physician’s opinion on tea and fluoride if you are planning to drink more than 4 cups of tea a day and definitely if you have an overactive thyroid.

You must keep an open mind and try several types of green teas before making your decision.
First, get ready for a slightly bitter taste that comes from the good old catechin. Nature gave catechins a lot of power that your body can benefit from, but nature also made it bitter. After several cups, trust me, you won’t call it bitter…

Very quickly: After harvest the leaves are roasted or lightly steamed. The roasting or steaming is important. If we didn’t heat or steam the leaves, the all-important polyphenols (antioxidants) would ferment and there would be no benefit of green tea. So, the heat or steam destroys enzymes that would ferment or destroy the health-giving polyphenols. When black or oolong tea is made, the leaves are not roasted or steamed. The leaves are withered, and fermentation goes along taking away the health-giving polyphenols (antioxidants).
What makes a green tea taste different from another one?
One factor is the procedure: are the leaves roasted (China) or steamed (Japan)? The other main factor is the climate. Just like a glass of wine, it will taste different in California or France. Weather, soil, elevation, all make a big difference. A tea from one year can taste different from another year and still come from the same place. Lots of things are influencing the outcome of tea.
Quality of tea leaves
There is no standard grading system for tea leaves. However, it is a general rule that the larger the tea leafs the better the tea. If the tip of the tea leaf is present, we can expect a higher quality.
Did you know that a skilled tea leaf picker can collect 600 grams (a pound is 450 grams) of tea leaves in a day? Talk about a tedious job!
Picking is often done mechanically, but the hand-picking method is used as well. No wonder why very high-quality tea can cost several hundreds of dollars for one pound.
Quality of water
It counts! Chlorine and fluoride should be filtered out from the tap water. But a high mineral content in water is the best to bring out all the essences and tastes of tea. Those who developed a good taste bud for green tea saying that an alkaline pH of 7.9 is the best.
And one more thing. Boiling water can ruin your tea as well. After boiling it, let is stand for 1 minute before pouring it over your tea leaves.

Chinese people are very serious about their tea and they truly enjoy their so-called Chinese tea ceremony.
They have the first recorded history about the benefit of green tea, which was written about 3000 years BC. Now, this was a long time ago!
According to the story Chinese leader and medical expert, Sheng Nong, was boiling water under a tea tree when some tea leaves fell into the boiling pot. After drinking it, he felt the power of his new discovery and placed tea on his medicinal herbs list.

The Chinese were the first ones who developed a ceremony involving tea. The Chinese tea ceremony emphasizes the tea rather than the ceremony. The Japanese culture does just the opposite, emphasizing the ceremony rather than the tea. Chinese people are interested in how the tea tastes, smells and how it compares to other types of teas they have had before. Chinese don’t have strict rituals while they are drinking their tea; it is not related to religion. In Japan, the tea ceremony is about rituals. The Chinese tea ceremony is purely an enjoyment, meditation, catching the moment of time.

Dragon Well is one of the most famous Chinese green teas. Production began 1200 years ago. It has four makes – Lion, Dragon, Cloud, Tiger, where the “Lion” gives the best quality. Gunpowder is the main green tea export in China.
The Japanese Tea Ceremony
The Japanese tea ceremony goes back as early as around 805 AD when the first tea seeds were brought from China.
The returning Buddhist priest Yeisei, who supposedly carried the tea seeds, also brought the religious meditation back with himself that tea drinking involves. He is known as the “Father of Tea” in Japan. Tea drinking was spreading in the upper level of society fast and it grew to an art form, which is characterized by the Japanese Tea Ceremony.
The Tea Ceremony called cha-no-yu or sado. The main focus is on the ceremony and on the rituals that it involves. It is not really about tea drinking but aesthetics. The beauty of all the physical objects, the environment, and meditation that surrounds the tea ceremony.
It is interesting but also hard to believe for a lot of us that in order to perform the Japanese tea ceremony properly, it requires years of training! And the ceremony itself can last (a longer version) up to 4 hours!
A famous Japanese General Toyotomi Hideyoshi said:
“When the tea is made with water drawn from the depths of the mind
Whose bottom is beyond measure,
We really have what is called cha-no-yu.”
This might explain why it takes years of training…
Japanese people are still using the ancient method of steaming to make green tea. The benefit of green tea is widely believed throughout Japan. There are large variations in quality within green tea. It is said that the best Japanese green tea comes from around Kyoto.

Brewing Green Tea
Brewing green tea that tastes good can be tricky. If you know what you are doing, it’s quite simple.
First and most is to get good quality tea leaves.
Second, use good tasting water. Get fresh, cold tap water or bottled water if preferred.
Third, know the right water temperature you need for your type of green tea leaves. Never pour boiling hot water over tea leaves or you end up with a bitter tasteless cup of tea.
Here is a summary for brewing green tea the right way:
For one cup of tea (8-12 oz.)put one teaspoon of dried green tea leaves in the teapot. Use the right water temperature (go by the time the water needs to stand after boiling). Cover it and let it stand for the recommended time.
